Job interviews are always one of those situations that you can never be too prepared for. They will give you a rush of excitement and anxiety all in one. They will have you overthink every little word that you said during the process. But as long as you are prepared you should not worry!

While you may feel nervous about the interview, the experience and confidence you gain from it can benefit you in future job prospects and teach you how to present yourself to different recruiters.

My Experience

At my second year of University I was given the instruction that I had to apply for an internship online and complete a video interview. The interview consisted of different questions and my answers were only allowed to be recorded once. Of course you can imagine the emotions that engulfed me, the anxiousness of “What if I stutter or say the wrong thing?” or “What if I run out of things to say?”. I was very apprehensive to complete the interview as I did not know what to expect. I had been to job interviews before but never had to do one online, so the process was completely new to me.

To prepare, I did my research regarding the company and job role I was applying to and practiced answering general interview questions incase they came up. By doing this I felt less anxious about completing the interview and gained experience and confidence in the steps I would need to take when I apply for graduate jobs. I now know that if you are really interested in the company and you feel passionate about the job that it will reflect in the interview to the recruiters and they will be able to see how much you want the job.

Due to my preparation and the experience I wanted to gain from this task I was able to score highly in my interview and received a grade of 90% in my performance. One of the main points I was acknowledged for was my knowledge of the job as well as my communication and how I presented myself. Receiving the feedback enabled me to feel more self-assured and ready for when I graduate University and have to attend interviews for any job in the future!

The Next Steps…

My next steps to improve would be to practice practice practice! You know what they say, practice makes perfect and following on from the comments I received from the interview assessment there is always room for improvement.

Due to this experience I collated a lot of important messages that I will use in the future. For example, I have applied for a summer internship to work for a company and have been offered an interview, so by completing this assessment it has allowed me to work on my strengths and weaknesses.

One of my suggestions was to work on using better examples of scenarios where I have demonstrated a certain quality. In the future I will work on this and have a few planned out before to ensure I am selling myself as highly as possible to the recruiters.
